The 2025 winter transfer window is officially over, and there are so many things to unpack after a frantic past few weeks, especially for Serie A clubs.
Serie A table leaders Napoli, Inter Milan, Atalanta, Lazio, and Juventus have been busy buying or selling players to keep up in the Scudetto race or clinch a spot in the Top 4. Meanwhile, teams like AC Milan and AS Roma have also done their parts, as they’re not waving the white flag despite their current predicaments.
With around 15 matchdays left in the 2024-25 campaign, every point counts for all 20 teams, and they’re hoping that their moves in January will help them get to where they want to be.
Winner: Juventus
Juventus’ SBOTOP Serie A 2025 odds of maintaining a Top 4 berth have drastically improved after a productive winter transfer window. The Old Lady got rid of deadwood by selling Danilo to Flamengo and loaning Arthur Melo to Girona. In return, they loaned Randal Kolo Muani from PSG, Renato Veiga from Chelsea, and Lloyd Kelly from Newcastle United. They also bought Alberto Costa from Vitoria Guimaraes for only €12.5 million.
Kolo Muani already fits like a glove under Thiago Motta’s free-flowing system, as the Frenchman already has three league goals (and multiple Serie A 2025 highlights) in his first two Serie A appearances. He scored his first goal in a 2-1 loss against Napoli and notched a brace in their 4-1 victory over Empoli last Sunday.
Before Kolo Muani arrived, Juventus dropped points too often because they lacked the goalscoring punch they needed. Dusan Vlahovic has struggled to find form this season under Thiago Motta, raising doubts over his long-term future at the Allianz Stadium.
Renato Veiga also did well in his full debut with Juventus against Empoli. The Chelsea loanee recorded three successful tackles, four clearances, and one interception over the 90 minutes. The 21-year-old centre back also won three of his four aerial duels and had an 85-per cent pass completion rate.
Lloyd Kelly is another versatile defender who could play centre back or left-back. Alberto Costa, on the other hand, looks like a long-term project.
Loser: Napoli
Napoli might find it difficult to stay at the top of the Serie A table because their losses outweigh the gains they had during the winter transfer window.
Antonio Conte and co. were eyeing Alejandro Garnacho as Kvaratskhelia’s long-term replacement. However, they couldn’t agree to terms with Manchester United, and Garnacho decided to fight for his spot at Old Trafford.
In return, Napoli only got Noah Okafor from AC Milan, Luis Hasa from Lecce, Philip Billing from Bournemouth, and Simone Scuffet from Cagliari. None of them compare to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s calibre, to say the least.
And then there’s the unresolved situation with Victor Osimhen, who was loaned to Galatasaray during the summer transfer window. Napoli missed their opportunity to sell the Nigerian international to an exorbitant transfer fee, and they’ll have to settle for less when they get rid of him for good this upcoming offseason.
Winner: AC Milan
AC Milan have a knack for finding diamonds in the rough, and they hope that’s the case after the recently concluded winter transfer window. The Rossoneri acquired Joao Felix, Riccardo Sottil, and Santiago Gimenez to bolster their frontline. In return, they parted ways with Davide Calabria, Noah Okafor, Ismael Bennacer, and Alvaro Morata.
Felix played sparingly for Chelsea this season, and playing for AC Milan is a perfect opportunity to re-establish himself. Sottil reinforces AC Milan’s wing depth, and Santiago Gimenez could take the starting striker spot after recording 16 league goals and three assists for Feyenoord earlier this season.
With better attacking depth, AC Milan can realistically make a run at the Top 4 or even win their second piece of silverware this season in the form of the Coppa Italia. After winning the Supercoppa Italiana last month, Sergio Conceicao will aim for another one in the Coppa Italia.
Loser: Lecce
Lecce are doing their best to stave off relegation since they’re 14th in the table with 23 points, but their mission gets tougher following the sale of one of their best players this winter. The Salentini recently sold Patrick Dorgu to Manchester United for €30 million, which is less than they wanted, considering the Red Devils’ dire situation.
Dorgu was the team’s third-leading scorer with three league goals and one assist. Manager Marco Giampaolo has deployed Antonino Gallo to take Dorgu’s left-back spot, with Tete Morente and Danilo Veiga as backups.
