Serie A: Napoli Must Make a Statement in Turin

Juventus vs Napoli

Napoli remain in contention for this year’s Serie A title, but time is slowly not on their side. Antonio Conte’s men dropped to third in the Italian top-flight table recently with 43 points – six points adrift of first-seeded Inter Milan.

The Partenopei are undefeated in their last six league games since losing 1-0 against Udinese last December. Following their 1-0 win against Sassuolo last Saturday, Napoli dropped points in their 1-1 draw against Copenhagen, which saw them slip to 25th in the Champions League standings. Their recent setback put them in a bad mood ahead of their visit to the Allianz Stadium on Sunday evening.

Napoli will face Juventus, who are fifth in the standings with 39 points. Luciano Spalletti’s side notched a 1-0 loss against Cagliari, but bounced back with a 2-0 win over Benfica yesterday to improve to 15th in the Champions League phase.

Juventus pushing for Top 4

Juventus boss Luciano Spalletti is reportedly looking for a new striker to boost their Serie A campaign
Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie speaks with manager Luciano Spalletti during a Serie A match against Fiorentina at Artemio Franchi Stadium

Juventus are going all-in for a Top 4 spot, which is why they’ve been quite busy in the winter transfer window. According to reports, head coach Luciano Spalletti is looking for another striker, especially with Dusan Vlahovic still sidelined by an adductor injury.

The Bianconeri have shown interest in Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta, but nothing came to fruition. Instead, they’re on the verge of loaning Youssef En-Nesyri from Fenerbahce, which comes with a €19 million purchase option and a €3 million performance-related add-ons.

With the En-Nesyri deal still in the works, Jonathan David will continue to start as the No. 9, with Lois Openda as the backup. It also helps that Khephren Thuram, Weston McKennie, Fabio Miretti, and Kenan Yildiz have also contributed in the final third recently.

Napoli suffer lineup blow in the final third

Antonio Conte was reportedly fuming after Napoli could only muster a 1-1 draw against 10-man Copenhagen on Tuesday, which put them on the brink of Champions League elimination. They entered the European football tournament as one of the expected Top 16 participants, but here they are, so Napoli will likely vent their ire on Juventus this weekend.

It doesn’t help Napoli that David Neres is confirmed to be out for at least two months due to an ankle injury he sustained against Lazio earlier this month. The Brazilian winger tried to play through it against Parma a few days later, but was ultimately withdrawn. Fellow wingers Matteo Politano and Amir Rrahmani are also in the medical room.

Napoli will be shorthanded in the final third against Juventus. Besides losing Neres, Politano, and Rrahmani to injury, they also loaned Lorenzo Lucca and Noa Lang to Nottingham Forest and Galatasaray. This leaves a lot on Rasmus Hojlund and Scott McTominay’s plates, while Eljif Elmas, Antonio Vergara, and Giuseppe Ambrosino will get more opportunities. On the other hand, Romelu Lukaku took the day off against Copenhagen, and he might come off the bench against Juventus.

History

Napoli won 2-1 over Juventus in their reverse fixture at the Diego Maradona Stadium last December, as Rasmus Hojlund bagged a brace for the Partenopei, and Weston McKennie scored a consolation goal for the Bianconeri. At the time, Antonio Conte’s side were on top of the Italian top-flight standings.

The Partenopei have won three of their last four league meetings with the Bianconeri (D1). Juventus’ previous victory in this fixture was a 1-0 result in December 2023. Federico Gatti scored the marginal goal in the 51st minute to give then-manager Igor Tudor the win.

Napoli have the slight edge in terms of recent form, with two wins and three draws in their last five league games, whereas Juventus have three wins, one draw, and one loss during the same stretch.
