Serie A: Milan Are the Derby Kings…Again

Inter Milan’s lead at the top of Serie A was cut to seven points on Sunday night following a 1-0 win for AC Milan in the Derby Di Milano, for the second time this season.

Milan beat the league leaders by the same score line back in November and a first half goal from Pervis Estupinan was the difference at a packed San Siro this weekend. I Rossoneri have kept the title race just about open, with seven points to make up in ten games and there are, finally, signs of I Nerazzurri’s fallibility. Last week Inter crashed out of the Champions League at the hands of minnows Bodo Glimt and another derby defeat will have done nothing for their mood.

In a tight first half with only one shot on target each, Inter’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan forced a save out of Milan keeper Mike Maignan on 34 minutes; and just one minute later I Rossoneri were ahead. Youssouf Fofana fed Estupinan on the left side of the penalty area and the Ecuadorian wingback smashed his shot high into the top left corner of the net.

Maignan made a superb save to deny Piotr Zielinski in the second half but that was about all Inter could muster on another frustrating night for their fans. The Serie A 2026 betting odds have been right behind I Nerazzurri since the turn of the year and that is where they remain.

But in my SBOTOP preview of this match I asked whether Inter would have the stomach for this big game after their European catastrophe; and it turns out they didn’t.

Napoli took a step closer to Champions League qualification and cemented their place in the top three thanks to a well earned 2-1 victory over Torino on Friday night. In a five way fight for the third and fourth places, I Partenopei are joined by Como, with AS Roma, Juventus and Atalanta in pursuit.

Goals from Alisson Santos and Eljif Elmas were enough to see off Il Toro, with the opener coming on just seven minutes. But the biggest cheer of the night came on 79 minutes when summer signing Kevin De Bruyne made his first appearance since October as Napoli strolled to victory.

Brazilian star Santos rifled in his goal into the bottom left corner and Elmas hit the unstoppable second after taking a pass from Matteo Politano. Torino nicked a goal through Cesare Casadei with just two minutes left on the clock but the Napoli win was more comfortable than the score line suggested.

Como fourth and a big win for Juve

Cesc Fabregas’ Como continued its strong run towards European football thanks to a 2-1 win away to Cagliari. Como went ahead with its first meaningful attack and there was a touch of luck involved as Lucas Da Cunha scuffed a shot into the path of Martin Baturina and he gleefully swept the ball home. Cagliari equalised through a diving header from Sebastiano Esposito, but a 20 yard screamer from Da Cunha lifted Como up to fourth place.

In other Serie A 2026 news Juventus picked up a first league win since February 1st in some style, as they hammered bottom club Pisa 4-0. After a goalless first half the Old Lady let rip in the second period and broke the Pisa resistance on 54 minutes when Andrea Cambiaso broke through. From then on there was only going to be one result and Kephren Thuram made it 2-0 midway through the half before Kenan Yildiz got in on the action on 75 minutes.

Jeremie Boga’s injury time goal put the cap on an impressive win as Juventus rained 25 shots down on the Pisa goal, seven on target. The Old Lady stays sixth but four points ahead of Atalanta.

Roma slipped down to fifth place following a 2-1 defeat away to Genoa on Sunday afternoon. I Giallorossi chucked away a two goal lead to draw 3-3 with Juventus last week and Gian Piero Gasperini was looking for a reaction in Genoa… but he was disappointed. The hosts won a penalty early in the second half, converted by Junior Messias, but Roma hit back quickly as Evan Ndicka headed a rebound into the net. But Genoa were the better side on the day and deservedly won the game when substitute Vitinha converted a cross from Patrizio Masini.

Four wins from their last five home games has helped lift Genoa away from the drop zone, but Roma are stuttering at the wrong time.

Seventh placed Atalanta missed a chance to gain ground after dropping points at home to Udinese in a 2-2 draw in Bergamo. But La Dea had to fight back from a two goal deficit to avoid back to back losses. Udinese broke through to lead at half time, thanks to Thomas Kristensen and the visitors doubled their lead early in the second half when Keinan Davis finished superbly with a curler into the bottom corner.

But that sparked Atalanta who roared back thanks to a quick-fire double from Gianluca Scammaca. Nikola Krstovic almost won it with a low shot into the corner but a fine save from Maduka Okoye earned tenth placed Udinese a point.
