Liverpool vs Newcastle United
After swatting away 2024 champions Manchester City, Arne Slot’s Liverpool will hope to continue their Premier League title charge on Wednesday when Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United are the visitors to Anfield.
The Magpies are in the race for the Champions League places, climbing to fifth, behind Manchester City on goal difference alone, after beating Nottingham Forest 4-3. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s victory over the Sky Blues extended their lead at the top to 11 points, with just 11 games remaining.
These two teams have had some brilliant battle over the years and Liverpool vs Newcastle is always a great watch; but the Geordies have failed to win on their last 29 visits to Anfield…could this be 30th time lucky?!
Talking Points
Salah and Isak are lethal weapons
Two of the Premier League’s best strikers, well the best and one of the chasing group, will be on show on Wednesday and both Mohammed Salah and Alexander Isak will be good bets to score. At 32 years of age Liverpool’s Egyptian legend is in the form of his life, scoring 25 goals and making 16 assists in 27 games. The Anfield faithful have been terrified of losing their star to the Saudi Pro League over the past 12 months… though there will be plenty of rival fans wishing he had gone! As one of the deadly trio alongside Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, Salah was in the Reds’ 2020 title winning team. He was the best player then and he is now as he leads a new generation of Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez. How long can he go on? I’m not so sure but Salah will certainly see out another title winning season at Anfield, as the Premier League 2025 betting odds confidently predict.
At 25 years of age Swedish star Isak has his best years ahead of him but he is really making his mark this season, scoring 19 goals and making five assists, the same number of goals as Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and two more assists having played a game fewer. He scored a double in two minutes in Newcastle’s 4-3 win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday and that made it 50 goals in 76 games for Isak. At 6ft 4in he has a seven inch height advantage over Salah but he has a long way to go to reach the Egyptian’s achievements. He’s already becoming a fans’ favourite on Tyneside though and Isak is only two behind Andy Cole’s all time record of 12 away league goals for the Magpies.
Both are quick players and lethal in the finish…a terror to defenders and a joy for fans to watch; and Salah and Isak will be fighting for the limelight on Wednesday night.
Team news

Slot played against the Sky Blues without a recognised striker, using Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai as advanced midfielders supporting the wing wizards Salah and Diaz. Szoboszlai got on the score-sheet and he may well start again; but Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota are both pushing for a start, and Slot might opt for Gakpo, who came on as a substitute against City, dropping Jones to the bench. And there may be a change at left back if the manager chooses to rest Andy Robertson, who has struggled with injury this season, and Kostas Tsimikas is standing by.
Newcastle have been doing just fine in the cup competitions, in the fifth round of the FA Cup and they are in the Carabao Cup final, due to play against Liverpool in March. But the Magpies’ recent Premier League 2025 results have not been so clever and they avoided a third consecutive loss when they held on to a narrow win over Forest. At 4-1 up they were coasting but Newcastle were undone at set-pieces, and the nearing return of centre back Sven Botman will certainly help in defence. Whether the Dutch ace makes it for Wednesday is in the balance.
There is more certainty at the other end of the pitch where Isak will be supported by wing wizard Anthony Gordon and the classy midfield duo of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, and the Geordies have all they need to contribute to another Liverpool vs Newcastle goal fest.
History
Liverpool have bossed this relationship, winning 36 to Newcastle’s 11 of the last 60 games and the two teams meet again in Carabao Cup final on the Sunday 16th March as the Geordies attempt to end their 70 year wait for a major trophy.
Newcastle have won four and lost two of the last six in all competitions while their hosts have won three, drawn two and lost one, and the Reds have been imperious at home in the league with nine wins, two draws and a single defeat.
Betting Tip
Can Newcastle silence the Kop? Well you can get SBOTOP odds of 4.93 for a Magpies win and 4.27 for a draw, with the Double Chance; Away win or Draw at 2.46.
Liverpool’s recent clash with Aston Villa and the Mersey Derby showed they can be frustrated, though they were back to their best against Manchester City and are priced at 1.45 to win. But the Magpies can be sensational on their day and they will be right up for this match. Howe’s team may well lose but I think they will stay in the game throughout.
