Coventry are back in the Premier League after a 25-year absence. Under head coach Frank Lampard, the Sky Blues earned their promotion to the English top-flight after winning the EFL Championship, registering 95 points – 11 points ahead of second-seeded Ipswich Town (who are also promoted alongside Hull City).
Now that they’re here, Coventry plan to pull out all the stops to stay for a long time, similar to what Leeds United and Brentford have done in recent years. They can also look up to Sunderland, who punched above their weight in their first season back, finishing seventh in the Premier League standings to secure European football.
However, the SBOTOP Premier League 2026 odds aren’t optimistic about Coventry’s chances to maintain their top-flight status beyond the 2026-27 campaign, which should motivate Lampard’s boys to spring a surprise.

So how did Coventry get here?
Coventry were a founding member of the Premier League in 1992-93, so it was fitting that the Sky Blues returned to the English top-flight after their relegation in 2000-01.
The Sky Blues had been through hell before getting this far. Their lowest ebb came when they dropped into the fourth tier in 2017, but after losing to Luton Town in the playoff final in 2023, Coventry finished ninth and fifth in 2023-24 and 2024-25 before dominating the EFL Championship this past season.
Frank Lampard’s side secured their promotion in a 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park in April, as Bobby Thomas scored an 84th-minute equaliser after trailing for the most part to secure the necessary point. The Sky Blues then capped off their 2025-26 campaign with dominant victories over Portsmouth (5-1), Wrexham (3-1), and Watford (4-0).
Lampard, who’s one of the most decorated players in Premier League history, called leading Coventry back to the Premier League the best accomplishment he’s had in his budding coaching career thus far. Before taking the Coventry job in 2024, Lampard coached Derby County, Chelsea, and Everton.
When Coventry ultimately secured their promotion, Lampard was classy enough to give his predecessor, Mark Robins, a shoutout for helping set the foundation for the Sky Blues’ success.
Key players for Coventry
Coventry fired on all cylinders during their superb 2025-26 campaign in the EFL Championship. Frank Lampard’s side had the league’s best offence and defence, scoring 97 goals while conceding only 45 for a healthy goal difference of +52. This was one of the highest goal tallies in recent Championship history – two more than Leeds United in 2024-25.
Lampard has mainly set his side up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, although there has been occasional use of a back three. The former Chelsea midfielder will have his work cut out for him against stronger opponents in the English top-flight.
Haji Wright was the focal point in the final third, but it was very much a team effort, with Lampard getting the most out of his squad. The American striker was the Sky Blues’ top scorer with 17 goals, followed by Ellis Simms (13 goals), Brandon Thomas-Asante (13 goals), Ephron Mason-Clark (10 goals), and Victor Torp (10 goals). Milan van Ewijk was their top playmaker with eight assists, while Torp and Jack Rudoni had seven assists apiece.
Coventry largely benefited from the successful loans of Frank Onyeka and Carl Rushworth. Onyeka came from Brentford and became an integral cog in their midfield rotation. Rushworth came from Brighton and became their No. 1 goalkeeper, helping them keep 17 clean sheets in his 46 appearances.
Onyeka and Rushworth were recently signed to permanent deals, while Coventry added Loum Tchaouna and Aurele Amenda from Burnley and Eintracht Frankfurt, respectively, adding depth to their frontline and rearguard.
Super early projection for Coventry
Following their goalless draw against Northampton Town in last weekend’s club friendly, Coventry will play two more exhibition games against Espanyol and AS Monaco before opening their Premier League campaign against defending champions Arsenal.
And it won’t get any easier for them early on, as they’ll face Manchester City in the third week and Brighton in the fourth week after facing Hull City in the second week. Given their difficult opening set of matches, Frank Lampard’s men might be in for a harsh reality check, which could make or break their season.
Growing pains are inevitable for the Sky Blues, but if they get enough positive Premier League 2026 results and ultimately avoid relegation this upcoming season, they would achieve their main objective.
