La Liga has been the home of some of the greatest players in Europe for as long as we can remember.
From the Galacticos of Real Madrid in the early 2000’s to the dominant Barcelona sides led by current Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, several top quality playmakers have graced the pitch to provide football fans moments that they’ll never forget.
Goals have always taken the spotlight but we must also recognise the effort behind it in the form of assists where one makes a beautiful pass that leads to a score.
The 2021/22 season is just around the corner and we can’t wait to see which players will emerge regularly in the La Liga 2021 highlights reel.
But for now, join SBOTOP as we take a short trip down memory lane by listing the top five players in the league’s all-time assist records.
Karim Benzema – 87 assists
Even at 33 years old, Karim Benzema remains the talisman for Real Madrid. The Frenchman has been a constant at the Bernabeu since his arrival in 2009 and he’s showing no signs of slowing down whatsoever.
Deployed as the advanced striker out front, Benzema’s main job is to haul in goals for Los Blancos which makes his passing quite an underrated skill.
When Benzema becomes a marked man by the opposition, Real Madrid are smart enough to use him as a decoy which opens opportunities for his fellow attackers.
He is one of the all-time leading scorers in club history with 192 goals in 383 appearances and he has also made 87 assists in the process.
There’s no doubt that Benzema will go down as one of La Liga’s greatest players when it’s all said and done and we expect him to continue to move up the scoring and assist charts when the new season commences this August.
Luis Figo – 89 assists
Luis Figo was vital to Barcelona’s success in the late 1990’s. Under former England manager Bobby Robson and Louis van Gaal, the Portuguese emerged as one of the best attacking midfielders of his generation.
After a five-year stint with the Blaugrana, Figo shocked everybody when he made his 62-M Euros move to rivals Real Madrid to be one of the original Galacticos signings under Florentino Perez.
The Portuguese will always be remembered for his elegant ball-handling as well as his searing pace that would strike fear to opposing backlines night in and night out.
Cristiano Ronaldo – 96 assists
The third highest in this list is also a Portuguese, and his name is Cristiano Ronaldo. Like Benzema, Ronaldo is approaching his late 30’s but he remains as strong as ever.
After a six-year stint with Manchester United, Cristiano Ronaldo made his record-breaking transfer to Real Madrid where he took his game to a whole new level especially whenever he faces Lionel Messi in countless El Clasicos.
Ronaldo right now is preparing for the upcoming 2021/22 season with Juventus. After failing to achieve their La Decima dream, the Portuguese is determined to guide I Bianconeri to the promise land once more.
Xavi – 128 assists
Xavi is undoubtedly one of the best products that La Masia has to offer especially if you’ll look at his resume.
The current Al Sadd manager broke plenty of records during his time at Barcelona while leading the club to eight La Liga trophies.
Barcelona forwards always have a field day whenever Xavi is around since he is adept in breaking down the defence with his positioning, ball retention, and incisive passes.
He spent all of his senior professional career playing for the Blaugrana and he is regarded as one of the club’s best players ever.
Lionel Messi -169 assists
What’s next for Lionel Messi, if you ask? Well, the Argentine has done it all and he has basically nothing left to prove.
But even if you tell him that, the fire still burns for the 34-year-old and he holds the highest La Liga 2021 odds to win the Golden Boot heading into the 2021/22 season.
Lionel Messi has earned the reputation of being one of the GOATs in football because of the incredible work he has done for Barcelona in the last 17 years.
After finishing third last term, the Blaugrana are determined to get back on top and they’ve reloaded with the additions of Memphis Depay and Sergio Aguero.
Barcelona fans are going to be thrilled to see these three share the field together and we expect them to be one of the most prolific attacking sides this upcoming season.
