So, who are the top strikers/centre-forwards in European football, and therefore, in 2026, the world?
Is it a Premier League poacher, someone who delivers football 2026 highlights regularly, or perhaps ensures the SBOTOP football 2026 betting odds are so one-sided as to make them virtually redundant? Well, in my view, all three.
For some time, it’s been my view that one particular duo are untouchable and sit in a league of their own.
I am going to start with one half of that duo, England skipper Harry Kane. Goals aren’t the be-all and end-all, but they go a pretty long way if we’re discussing centre-forwards. And Kane netted 61 times in all competitions for Bayern Munich last season.
As a result, he claimed a second European Golden Shoe and capped off the campaign by scoring a hat-trick in Bayern’s German Cup Final victory. Six goals at the World Cup wasn’t a bad return either.
Not only did Kane outscore Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe last season, but he did it while functioning in a collective context, facilitating play, and often dropping deep to spread balls about like a world-class playmaker.
As it stands in early August, he is also among the possible frontrunners for this year’s Ballon d’Or. The only other comparable goal machine to Kane is Haaland, whose consistency is just as ruthless.
The Norwegian made his name scoring nine goals in one game in an under-20 World Cup match, bagged a hat-trick on his Champions League debut (for RB Salzburg), and then went on to maintain some absurd numbers at Borussia Dortmund.
He has not stopped scoring since moving to Manchester City four years ago either and is fresh from knocking out Brazil and inspiring his country’s best-ever World Cup campaign.
As it stands, he has 62 goals in just 55 games for Norway and is, quite possibly, the game’s purest distillation of the art of centre-forward play since Gerd Muller was racking up Ballon d’Ors, European Cups, and World Cups in his 1970s pomp.
If Kane and Haaland are the front two par excellence, Mbappe is the all-rounder who can play anywhere across a front three. The first player in history to win two Golden Boots, he recently became the World Cup’s all-time top goalscorer with 22 goals and the first man to reach double figures for World Cup goals since the aforementioned Muller for West Germany in 1970.
Only Just Fontaine, who hit 13 for France in 1958, and Hungary’s Sandor Kocsis with 11 in 1954, have scored more individual goals in a single tournament – albeit in fewer matches.
If the trio of Kane, Haaland, and Mbappe are my first three (in any order), my fourth choice is Inter Milan captain and Argentine frontman Lautaro Martinez.
It wasn’t to be for him in the World Cup final. Two enforced changes at centre-back left the Inter striker stranded on the bench. After his decisive interventions against Egypt, Switzerland and England, the feeling of ‘what if?’ will linger over Argentina for a long time.
Yet 40 goals for his country and 175 and counting for Inter, where he won three Scudettos and the Capocannoniere award for Serie A’s top scorer in the last two seasons – as well as a league and cup double – show why ‘El Toro’ deserves ultimate respect, for he is an elite-level marksman.
There is a very strong argument for reigning world player of the year, Ousmane Dembele, to complete my top five. After all, since Mbappe left PSG for Real Madrid, Dembele has stepped up to a whole new level in terms of his mentality: he’s been a figure that a young Parisian team all look up to.
But I am going for someone who may be winding down his career but continues to score at a level few can match.
If it hadn’t been for the outbreak of the COVID pandemic (no award was given out that year), Robert Lewandowski would surely have won the 2020 Ballon d’Or.
The Pole has just moved to America to play, but consider the statistics. During 12 seasons in Germany with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, he won 10 league titles and led Bayern to the 2020 Champions League.
He finished second in Ballon d’Or voting in 2021 and won the Best FIFA Men’s Player Award in 2020 and 2021.
After moving to Barcelona in 2022, he helped them win three La Liga titles and the 2025 Copa del Rey, scoring 120 goals in 193 games. Levels few can match. In fact, I challenge anyone to find me a better quintet in world football.
