Bundesliga: Die Adler Aim to Tame the Bloodied Wolves

Eintracht Frankfurt vs VfL Wolfsburg

Eintracht Frankfurt will play their second match of the week this Sunday, as they will host VfL Wolfsburg at Deutsche Bank Park. Dino Toppmöller’s side is the third seed in the Bundesliga standings with 37 points, and they are a distant contender for this year’s Meisterschale.

Die Adler are fresh from a 2-0 loss against AS Roma in the Europa League last night. Despite the defeat, Eintracht Frankfurt made it to the Round of 16 without going through the play-off round. They are undefeated in their previous four matches in the German top-flight, including a 2-2 draw against Hoffenheim last Sunday.

Meanwhile, VfL Wolfsburg are seventh in the table with 28 points. Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men are fresh from a 2-2 draw against Holstein Kiel. With no games in Europe, they’ve had a full week to prepare against their hosts.

Talking Points

Who will score for Eintracht Frankfurt?

Eintracht Frankfurt have the uncanny ability to cash in on their strikers at the right time, and they did just that recently. Die Adler sold Omar Marmoush, with 15 Bundesliga goals this season, to Manchester City for a reported fee of £59 million.

Replacing a Bundesliga Golden Boot contender is not easy, but head coach Dino Toppmöller may have probably found his next goal scorer in Hugo Ekitike. The 22-year-old forward has found a home in Frankfurt during his successful loan stint with them last season. PSG received €16.5 million for Ekitike and the young Frenchman signed a deal with Eintracht Frankfurt until the end of the 2028-29 campaign.

Hugo Ekitike has 11 league goals and three assists this season, and he scored a brace against Hoffenheim last weekend. The Reims native also started against AS Roma yesterday but was subbed off in the 72nd minute for Igor Matanovic.

But Ekitike cannot do it alone for Eintracht Frankfurt, so he’ll need help from Can Uzun, Mario Gotze, Fares Chaibi, and Ansgar Knauff. The four have combined for six league goals and seven assists this season.

VfL Wolfsburg seek Danish reinforcements

VfL Wolfsburg have been busy in the winter transfer window, as they’ve increased their Danish contingent with the acquisitions of Andreas Skov Olsen from Club Brugge and Mads Roerslev from Brentford (via loan). Skov Olsen had eight league goals and four assists and Roerslev had two assists before joining the Wolves.

Jonas Wind and Joakim Mæhle are probably happy reuniting with their national teammates, which only means good news for VfL Wolfsburg. Wind is the team’s joint-top scorer alongside Mohamed Amoura with eight league goals, while Mæhle has three league goals and three assists this season.

The Wolves are eager to bounce back after dropping points against Holstein Kiel. After taking a 2-1 lead through Patrick Wimmer and Jonas Wind, Holstein Kiel found the equaliser in the 80th minute, as goalkeeper Kamil Grabara couldn’t keep out Steven Skrzybski’s shot away from the goal line.

History

Eintracht Frankfurt and VfL Wolfsburg have already squared off earlier this season. Eintracht Frankfurt won 2-1 in the reverse fixture at the Volkswagen Arena last September, as Omar Marmoush completed his brace late in the match to nullify Ridle Baku’s second-half equaliser.

With 37 points after the first 19 matchdays, Eintracht Frankfurt are enjoying their best run at this juncture since the 1992-93 season, where they had 38 points. Their recent draw against Hoffenheim was the first time Die Adler dropped points this calendar year.

VfL Wolfsburg have amassed 16 points from their nine away games – their joint-best Bundesliga season on the road with 2018-19. However, they have lost two of their last three away matches. The Wolves have 22 Bundesliga victories over Die Adler, their second-most tally against a single opponent (behind 23 against Borussia Monchengladbach).

Betting Tip

The Bundesliga 2025 odds expect Eintracht Frankfurt to complete a league double over VfL Wolfsburg for the first time this weekend. Die Adler are at 1.96 odds to win, whereas the Wolves are priced at 3.28 to take three points, and a stalemate is at 3.49 in the 1X2 market. This fixture has featured a handful of goals, and Sunday shouldn’t be any different.

Besides our recommended bet, SBOTOP football fans and bettors will get their share of Bundesliga 2025 highlights, making alternatives like Total Goals 2-3 at 2.15 and Over 2.75 at 1.68 worth considering. Moreover, a Correct Score of 2-1 in favour of the hosts – the result of the reverse fixture – can give you 7.90 your bet. This is achievable for Die Adler even without their star striker, Omar Marmoush.
