Newcastle United vs Barcelona
Hansi Flick’s Barcelona are on their way to Newcastle on Tuesday for a tasty Champions League clash, and the Catalans will arrive in England in fine form, top of the La Liga table and on a run of four consecutive victories.
Eddie Howe’s Newcastle have struggled for consistency this season, dogged by injuries, and they sit down in 12th place in the Premier League table, and have just crashed out of the FA Cup, 3-1 at home to Manchester City.
Newcastle made it to the knockout phase thanks to a 9-3 aggregate win over Qarabag while the Blaugrana finished fifth at the league stage to qualify automatically; and the latest Champions League 2026 betting odds make Barca one of the four favourites to win the tournament, with the likes of 2025 finalists Inter Milan already out.
The Magpies will have revenge in mind when the Catalans show up on Tyneside as, when the two clubs met in September, a Marcus Rashford brace earned Barca at 2-1 win, while Anthony Gordon grabbed a consolation.
But this Barcelona side is gathering some serious momentum and they have some frighteningly good players!
Talking Points
Howe says this is the Magpies’ biggest moment
Newcastle’s FA Cup clash with Manchester City gave their fans a decent gauge to judge their teams on, before the La Liga league leaders arrive on Tuesday; and they fell short, as Omar Marmoush scored twice for the Sky Blues. And now manager Howe says the Magpies are about to play the biggest game in the club’s history.

“We’ve never been in this position in the Champions League before. And it’s the best competition for obvious reasons, I think it’s a massive game in our history and we need to approach it that way and need our supporters to think that way.”
There is no doubt the St James Park crowd will do all they can to roar on their heroes while it’s another big night for winger Gordon who scored four in the first leg against Qarabag to make it ten for the competition so far. He started on the bench in the loss to Manchester City and Gordon must surely start against Barca, while Nick Woltemade is likely to lead the line having returned from injury.
With skipper Bruno Guimaraes out for the foreseeable future, Sandro Tonali is a big player in the midfield, and the Italian star will need to be at his best to win that battle on Tuesday.
Pedri return is pivotal to Barca’s success
The Blaugrana met Athletic Bilbao in the Basque on Saturday, under pressure to win after Real Madrid had closed the gap at the top of La Liga to one point. Lamie Yamal was at it again, scoring a brilliant winner midway through the second half and the 18 year old is sure to make his fair share of Champions League 2026 highlights this week; you can’t keep Yamal out of the news but it was midfield ace Pedri who made the difference on a challenging night in the Basque.
The 23-year old La Roja ace has recently returned from injury, incredibly as one of seven Blaugrana players who have suffered hamstring injuries this season; and Flick was quick to say that Barca’s performance levels rose when he introduced Pedri at half time. He took control of the middle of the park, taking some weight off the shoulders of Dani Olmo and he created Yamal’s winner, superbly evading a Bilbao challenge to tee up his co-star who finished inside the far post. “Pedri makes everone better,” beamed a happy Flick after the game. “He changed the game. He connects the play very well. Olmo also played better in the second half.”
This is such a talented bunch of stars that for Flick to pick out Pedri is some accolade. Remember too that 2024/25 player of the season Raphinha is also back from a hamstring injury and he will give Newcastle plenty to think about on Tuesday.
History
Barca’s win on Tyneside in September was the only previous meeting between these two clubs; little surprise as this is the Geordies first foray into the knockout phase of the Champions League; while the Catalans have won the tournament five times, last in 2015.
In terms of recent form the Blaugrana have won four and lost two of their last six outings, though they have won the last four, while the Magpies have won three and lost three.
Betting Tip
With Newcastle at SBOTOP odds of 2.85, the draw at 3.77 and the Double Chance: Newcastle or Draw at 1.65, the Geordie faithful will be dreaming of a special night under the lights at St James’ Park.
But I think the visitors will have too much quality for their hosts again, and another 2-1 Barcelona win is at odds of 8.75.
