Fulham vs Brighton & Hove Albion
Two of the unsung heroes of the Premier League over the past few years meet by the Thames this weekend and both have the same immediate aim.
For there is no doubt that Fulham and Brighton would love the opportunity to enjoy European football next term.
The west Londoners did have such experience, most notably in 2010 when, under Roy Hodgson, they reached the final of the Europa League – losing narrowly to a Diego Forlan inspired Atletico Madrid.
Brighton have had such an experience rather more recently, two seasons ago in fact, when they enjoyed notable victories over Marseille, Ajax and Roma (who beat them at the last 16 stage).
Realistically, though, the opportunity to qualify becomes more difficult with each passing year as both clubs regularly have to sell their top players.
That is the case once again in 2025/26 and I expect both to fall short.
Regardless of whether they make it through, they are examples of how well-run clubs are thriving with a fraction of the resources of many of their counterparts.
Back to this Saturday and it’s the Cottagers versus the Seagulls – but who’s your money on?
Talking Points
Both teams had very differing fortunes in their most recent Premier League outings.
Lukas Nmecha came off the bench to score a 91st minute winner as Leeds ended Fulham’s six-game unbeaten run.
But that should not be regarded as a hard luck story as Marco Silva’s side were far from convincing in a game of few chances, paying the price when Nmecha turned home a cross in stoppage time for the game’s only goal.
Two days later, Brighton netted at the same time of their home match with Bournemouth to rescue a point as another sub, teenager Charalampos Kostoulas, scored a stunning overhead kick in a 1-1 draw.

That extended their own run to five games without defeat, although they didn’t really get going until Yankuba Minteh, Carlos Baleba and Georginio Rutter were introduced midway through the second half.
The results leave both Fulham and Brighton 11th and 12th respectively – a fine achievement in the circumstances.
Until their disappointment at Leeds, Fulham had enjoyed some early Premier League 2026 highlights, deservedly holding Liverpool thanks to a last-gasp stunner before beating west London neighbours Chelsea since the turn of the year.
Indeed, ahead of their trip to Elland Road, only leaders Arsenal (16) had collected more points than the Cottagers (14) since their impressive run began in mid-December.
Fulham are now in talks to sign winger Oscar Bobb from Manchester City.
The 22 year-old has fallen down the pecking order following the arrival of forward Antoine Semenyo a couple of weeks ago.
Bobb missed almost the whole of last season after fracturing a bone in his leg during training but his arrival would surely please Silva who is entering the final year of his contract.
While the Portuguese manager has been cryptic about his future at Craven Cottage, fans will be hoping he will pen a new contract as he has been integral to their progress in recent years.
History
Their meeting earlier this term ended 1-1 on the south coast when Fulham required a 96th minute equaliser from Rodrigo Muniz to earn a point – this after Matt O’Riley had put the hosts in front 10 minutes into the second half from the penalty spot.
That is one of nine draws they’ve had historically.
Fulham have the edge in this fixture with 27 victories compared to 23 Brighton successes.
Cast your mind back a year and the Seagulls were due a win over the Cottagers as you had to go back 10 games to the last time they beat them. That was until March when a Pedro penalty in the 98th minute won the day. Raúl Jiménez had earlier put Fulham in front but the lead lasted just six minutes before Jan Paul van Hecke levelled matters.
To give you an indication, until last March that previous victory was in the Championship in 2017 when two goals in a minute from Tomer Hemed (penalty) and Lewis Dunk won the day after Lucas Piazon had put Fulham ahead at Craven Cottage.
In west London last season, Fulham ran out 3-1 winners with an Alex Iwobi double and an own goal securing a 3-1 success and Baleba finding the net for the visitors.
It was in November 1928 in the former Division Three south that the two locked horns for the first time – a 2-0 Brighton success.
Betting Tip
The Cottagers are slight favourites on home turf and can be backed 1X2 @ 2.38 compared to Brighton 1X2 @ 2.70 with the SBOTOP Premier League 2026 betting odds.
Another 1-1 draw is offered @ 6.10 with Correct Score, while I have been tempted by the 1X2 Draw @ 3.22.
Asian Handicap odds are similarly matched with the hosts priced -0.25 @ 2.20 and Brighton -0.25 @ 2.42.
Over 2.75 goals @ 2.09 has caught my eye, as has Total Goals 2-3 @ 1.99 and 4-6 @ 3.18.
I am going to edge towards home success though.
