Bundesliga: RB Leipzig Keen to Assert Their Mastery of SC Freiburg

SC Freiburg vs RB Leipzig

Bayern Munich are running away with the Bundesliga title, but the battle for the remaining European places intensifies by the week. SC Freiburg and RB Leipzig are among those aspiring for Europe next season, and they will face off at Europa-Park Stadion this Saturday.

SC Freiburg are fifth in the German top-flight standings with 40 points. Julian Schuster’s side is one of the most in-form teams because they’re undefeated in their last five games. However, they’re fresh from a goalless draw against Augsburg last weekend.

RB Leipzig are right behind SC Freiburg in sixth place with 38 points. Marco Rose’s men are winless in their last three league matches, although they’re also in contention for this year’s DFB-Pokal because they’re through to the semi-finals.

Every point counts for the Black Forest and the Red Bulls, so SBOTOP football fans should expect nothing less when these two proud sides clash anew.

Talking Points

Sildillia becoming a key ingredient for SC Freiburg

Kiliann Sildillia is one of the top nominees for the Bundesliga Player of the Month award (for February 2025) since he took advantage of the opportunities he received from head coach Julian Schuster. With Lukas Kubler out with an injury, Sildillia took the starting right-back spot and never missed a minute of action.

Sildillia covered more ground than any other SC Freiburg player (44.7 kilometres) and scored two goals – including a wonderful acrobatic kick against Werder Bremen – making him the team’s second-highest scorer last month. The Black Forest didn’t concede a goal when the 22-year-old was in the starting lineup.

Kubler is back on the bench for SC Freiburg, but Schuster will continue to ride Sildillia’s hot hand. The French international will join Philipp Lienhart, Matthias Ginter, Christian Gunter, and keeper Noah Atubolu at the back.

Atubolu also deserves a shoutout for holding it down for the Black Forest. The 22-year-old goalkeeper is third in the Bundesliga Golden Glove race with nine clean sheets in 21 matches.

Gruelling stretch ahead for RB Leipzig

RB Leipzig’s top objective this season is to make it to the Champions League, but they will have to earn it the hard way considering their gruelling stretch of matches. Hoffenheim and Werder Bremen are the only bottom-half teams they’ll face in the next few weeks, and they also have a challenging semi-finals bout against VfB Stuttgart in the DFB-Pokal. Their ability to navigate this run will determine their fate.

RB Leipzig will continue to miss several key players, as Benjamin Henrichs (Achilles), Antonio Nusa (knee), Assan Ouédraogo (hamstring), and Xaver Schlager (knee) are in the medical room.

Benjamin Sesko, Lois Openda, and Xavi Simons must continue to shoulder the heavy load for the Red Bulls. They have combined for 23 league goals and 13 assists this season. The team also needs stronger defensive performances from Willi Orban, Lutsharel Geertruida, and El Chadaille Bitshiabu.

History

SC Freiburg and RB Leipzig have already squared off earlier this season. RB Leipzig notched a 3-1 win at the Red Bull Arena, erasing an early one-goal deficit. After Ritsu Doan scored the first goal in the 15th minute, Willi Orban, Lutsharel Geertruida, and Lois Openda scored goals in the second half to complete the fightback.

RB Leipzig have not lost their last 12 games against SC Freiburg (W8, D4), including five consecutive wins. However, the Red Bulls only won one of their last eight Bundesliga matches (D5, L2) and are winless in their last five away league games (D3, L2).

SC Freiburg’s 40 points after the first 24 matchdays are their best tally at this stage in the German top flight since recording 45 points in 2022-23.

Betting Tip

The Bundesliga 2025 odds expect a tight battle between SC Freiburg and RB Leipzig. Because they’re in better form and are playing at home, the Black Forest have a slight edge at 2.48, whereas the Red Bulls are at 2.56, and a draw is at 3.25 in the 1X2 market.

We’re confident about the Red Bulls’ chances of winning despite missing more players than their hosts. Marco Rose’s men have more collective firepower, and we expect new Bundesliga 2025 highlights from them this weekend.
