Milan and Roma Plan to Shake Off Serie A Woes in Coppa Italia Clash

AC Milan vs AS Roma

AC Milan and AS Roma are unlikely to win the Serie A trophy this season, so their best chance of winning another piece of silverware could be this year’s Coppa Italia. After acing their Round of 16 matches against Sassuolo and Sampdoria last December, these two proud teams will meet in the quarter-finals this Wednesday at San Siro.

The Rossoneri won a trophy this season in the form of the Supercoppa Italiana last month. This was Sergio Conceicao’s first silverware as AC Milan manager, and he would surely want to get another one in the Cup. AC Milan are coming off a 1-1 draw against Inter Milan last night.

AS Roma also changed managers midseason, bringing back Claudio Ranieri. The Giallorossi are also fresh from a 1-1 draw against Napoli in the Italian top-flight.

Which team will clinch their berth in the semi-finals? Continue reading below for today’s SBOTOP preview.

Talking Points

AC Milan will look different

AC Milan might field a new-look squad against AS Roma following their recent acquisitions during the winter transfer window. The Rossoneri have added Joao Felix, Riccardo Sottil, and Santiago Gimenez to strengthen their attack while letting go of Noah Okafor, Ismael Bennacer, Alvaro Morata, and former captain Davide Calabria. If things go according to plan, AC Milan’s newest additions could be named in the matchday squad on Wednesday. And if they do, they’ll likely come off the bench.

Meanwhile, Sergio Conceicao can recall Youssouf Fofana after the French midfielder served his suspension last weekend, but Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Emerson Royal, and Alessandro Florenzi all remain unavailable.

The Rossoneri will continue to rely heavily on Tijjani Reijnders, Christian Pulisic, and Rafael Leao to produce goals against AS Roma. The trio has combined for 17 league goals and 10 assists this season. Tammy Abraham, with two league goals and two assists, will likely join them up front.

Kyle Walker recently made his first start with the Rossoneri against Inter Milan, and he was one of their top performers. The former Manchester City right-back should keep his place in the starting XI this Wednesday, most likely moving forward.

AS Roma have fresher legs

Claudio Ranieri watches on ahead of the Serie A clash between AS Roma and Napoli

AS Roma might also look different against AC Milan on Wednesday, especially after head coach Claudio Ranieri made several interesting lineup decisions against Napoli last weekend.

Artem Dovbyk and Paulo Dybala were rested against the Partenopei to give way for Stephan El Shaarawy, Eldor Shomurodov, and Matias Soule. But it was Angelino who scored the stoppage-time equaliser. Dovbyk and Dybala should return to the starting XI on Wednesday. Dybala has 10 goals against AC Milan, but only one in the Coppa Italia. Mats Hummels should take one of the starting centre-back spots, as Gianluca Mancini must serve his suspension. The former Borussia Dortmund defender will likely join Evan Ndicka at centre-half.

Manu Kone and Stephan El Sharaawy sustained knocks against Napoli, but Ranieri has cleared concerns about their fitness, so they should be ready to go.

History

AC Milan and AS Roma have already faced off earlier this season. Both teams shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at San Siro last December, as Tijjani Reijnders and Paulo Dybala scored their goals in just seven minutes in the first half.

AS Roma and AC Milan have 14 Coppa Italia trophies combined, with the former having nine and the latter having five. The Giallorossi’s last triumph was in 2008, whereas the Rossoneri’s previous victory was in 2003.

After Juventus and Inter Milan, AC Milan (24) and AS Roma (22) reached the semi-finals more often than any other club. The last time the Rossoneri and the Giallorossi met in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals was in 2004, where the former recorded 2-1 victories in the two legs to advance to the semi-finals.

AS Roma have not progressed past the quarter-finals since 2017.

Betting Tip

The Coppa Italia 2025 odds predict a tight encounter between the Rossoneri and the Giallorossi. Because they’re playing at home, AC Milan have a slight edge at 2.08 odds, while AS Roma are at 3.09 odds to win, and a draw is at 3.14 in the 1X2 market.

Besides our recommended bet, football fans and bettors should expect these two teams to create Coppa Italia 2025 highlights, making alternatives like Over 2.25 at 1.68, Over 2.50 at 1.93, and Total Goals 2-3 at 1.98 worth considering. Moreover, a Correct Score of 1-1 – the result of their most recent meeting – has a decent offer of 6.10 your bet.
